Gynecological Exams

It is recommended that young women start receiving Gynecological Exams some time between the ages of 13 to 15 years old in order to promote reproductive and overall health (This first visit usually is just a conversation between the patient and provider). In a Gynecological Exam, the provider will assess overall health with a special focus on the female reproductive system, including functions and diseases of reproductive organs.

It is essential to prevent common cancers and diseases by having regular screenings such as blood tests, urine tests, ultrasounds, and pelvic and breast exams. Additionally, it is advised that women should start receiving PAP smears (a screen for cervical cancer) at age 21. A breast exam may also be done if there are specific concerns or suspicions of abnormalities. It also strongly recommended that women start receiving mammograms annually when they turn 40 years of age.
